Today we will talk about demographic audience of Tyrannosaur.
First I will talk about gender. Tyrannosaur's audience is 70% male as its a very violent movie that involves many action scenes this appeals to the male audience. The female audience is attracted to this movie because of its in-depth meanings of points like household violence and abusive alcohol use.
Now I shall talk about the age of Tyrannosaur's audience. Most of the audience will be in the age range of 18 to 30 as its an 18+ movie because of its horrific violent scenes. This film appeals to a wide audience because of its style which is social realism this style appeals to many people as they can relate to the situations from the film.
According to the National Readership Survey (NRS) the lifestyle of Tyrannosaur's audience is urban ventures and affluent achievers who are young adults that are 60% "hipsters" and 10% of people who can relate to the situation in the film as Tyrannosaur is not a well known film therefore it makes a good talking subject for a small circle of friends the rest of the audience can be anyone else that may be interested in the film. Some of the audience maybe even producers looking for inspiration in other films.
The spending power of Tyrannosaur's audience is medium. This means that the social groups in which Tyrannosaur is viewed stretch from the Skilled working class (C2) to the middle class (B) . These are people who own or rent their house and have a medium spending budget that is more likely to be spent than saved up.
This kind of audience would want to watch Tyrannosaur because of its relation to them and it also making a subject to talk about with their friends. This makes the film a point of interest therefore becoming quite popular in those certain circles of people.
Ien Ang (1991) has made a point about imaginary entity. Imaginary entity is a made up character that would represent the audience of a certain product that would show the whole audience in one person. I have made an imaginary entity for Tyrannosaur. My imaginary entity is Ross.
Ross is 21 and lives in Sheffield and he is an urban venturer. Ross is very friendly and likes to explore and experience new things. He is a student at a local university and has a part time job at a local pub. Ross also shares a semi-detached 3 bedroom house with two of his best mates. Ross likes films that a realistic like "This is England" and "4 Lions", Ross overall likes "Film 4" and "Warp Films". Ross likes these as they are a certain genre that bring him pleasure as said by (Rick Altman 1999). Ross comes from a wealthy family but wishes to be independent. Therefore he likes entertainment products that include social realism. Ross enjoys sports like rugby and ice hockey that he plays every second Sunday. Ross also enjoys to go out with his friends to go to certain events like gigs and parties to just catch up with his friends and meet new people.
This is the exact target audience that the film expects as the main point of the film is to make money and having this kind of audience means that the films popularity will expand really quickly. Tyrannosaur has won many awards including a BAFTA and a Silver Lion Award. This will mean that it has achieved its point across and was successful with what it wanted to do.
