Task 4 script

Welcome back to DB episode 4. I am Andrey and I will be your host for today. Todays show is about distribution and advertising of the film Tyrannosaur.

Films can be advertised through many types of media. The first way of advertising a film is through showing trailers at the cinema as it can be advertised with films that have the same theme this will attract the audience of that theme to the movie. This is a also a way to appeal to other producers who are searching for inspiration through other films.

The second way of advertising is through television, radio and the internet. Advertising through Televisions is good because the trailer will be shown to a certain audience as it will only be shown on certain channels like tyrannosaur was advertised on film 4. Advertising through media is very effective as many people use the media in day to day circumstances and will see these adverts. Films are often advertised through social media by showing trailers and posters. This is very popular as the younger generation are constantly using the social media this is also the way social medias make most of their money by advertising products on their clients pages and so on. This way it will be shown to a big audience and may become popular in different groups of people.

The third way of advertising is through posters and billboards. The poster for Tyrannosaur was fairly popular when it first appeared in the internet before the films release on the 7th of October 2011These appealed to a wide audience as random people noticed the advert and were intrigued by the mystery of the poster. The poster has what looks like n armed man standing between two trees and you can see the skeleton of a tyrannosaur under his feet. The mystery and the intrigue spread the popularity of the film.

The forth way of advertising a film is through promotional events this will mainly appeal to people who already know about the film but they will still tell their friend groups about this film therefore advertising the film. Tyrannosaur was advertised on 38+ award ceremonies out of which it won 18 including a BAFTA and a Silver Lion Award.

Another way of advertising the film is through reviews this will not only advertise the film but it will also show the audience whether its worth watching the film or not and how good it is. Tyrannosaur was rated 7.6 by IMDb and 7.3 by Rotten Tomatoes.

Now its very popular to watch films at home. Streaming then From Netflix and LoveFilm. Tyrannosaur was recently released on these networks Love Film rating it 7.6 the overall reviews of the film are mixed as some say that its a dark masterpiece and others say that its a horrible film that is way to violent and horrific. The film was also released on DVD on the 6th Feb.
2012 and is still available to buy from multiple internet sites and shops. The film can also be illegally downloaded from multiple sites. Tyrannosaur can sometimes be viewed on Film4.

LO3 Script

Hello and welcome to episode 3 of DB as always I am your host Andrey.

Today we will talk about demographic audience of Tyrannosaur.

First I will talk about gender. Tyrannosaur's audience is 70% male as its a very violent movie that involves many action scenes this appeals to the male audience. The female audience is attracted to this movie because of its in-depth meanings of points like household violence and abusive alcohol use.

Now I shall talk about the age of Tyrannosaur's audience. Most of the audience will be in the age range of 18 to 30 as its an 18+ movie because of its horrific violent scenes. This film appeals to a wide audience because of its style which is social realism this style appeals to many people as they can relate to the situations from the film.

According to the National Readership Survey (NRS) the lifestyle of Tyrannosaur's audience is urban ventures and affluent achievers who are young adults that are 60% "hipsters" and 10% of people who can relate to the situation in the film as Tyrannosaur is not a well known film therefore it makes a good talking subject for a small circle of friends the rest of the audience can be anyone else that may be interested in the film. Some of the audience maybe even producers looking for inspiration in other films.

The spending power of Tyrannosaur's audience is medium. This means that the social groups in which Tyrannosaur is viewed stretch from the Skilled working class (C2) to the middle class (B) .  These are people who own or rent their house and have a medium spending budget that is more likely to be spent than saved up.

This kind of audience would want to watch Tyrannosaur because of its relation to them and it also making a subject to talk about with their friends. This makes the film a point of interest therefore becoming quite popular in those certain circles of people.

Ien Ang (1991) has made a point about imaginary entity. Imaginary entity is a made up character that would represent the audience of a certain product that would show the whole audience in one person. I have made an imaginary entity for Tyrannosaur. My imaginary entity is Ross.

Ross is 21 and lives in Sheffield and he is an urban venturer. Ross is very friendly and likes to explore and experience new things. He is a student at a local university and has a part time job at a local pub. Ross also shares a semi-detached 3 bedroom house with two of his best mates. Ross likes films that a realistic like "This is England" and "4 Lions", Ross overall likes "Film 4" and "Warp Films". Ross likes these as they are a certain genre that bring him pleasure as said by (Rick Altman 1999). Ross comes from a wealthy family but wishes to be independent. Therefore he likes entertainment products that include social realism. Ross enjoys sports like rugby and ice hockey that he plays every second Sunday. Ross also enjoys to go out with his friends to go to certain events like gigs and parties to just catch up with his friends and meet new people.

This is the exact target audience that the film expects as the main point of the film is to make money and having this kind of audience means that the films popularity will expand really quickly. Tyrannosaur has won many awards including a BAFTA and a Silver Lion Award. This will mean that it has achieved its point across and was successful with what it wanted to do.

Thank you for listening to DB this has been your host Andrey and good day.

Audience Theory

There are a number of theories (academic ideas) about why audience consume media products.

John Hartley (1997) and Ien Ang (1991) sugested that producers create invisible fictions or imaginary enteties before creating a media prduct.

This is the starting point for creating the profile and the image that you will use in it.
